The history of the Medical School can be traced back to 1935–The National Central University. Over time, the name of this medical school has undergone changes as “The Medical College of Nanjing University”, “ 5th Military Medical University”, and “Nanjing Railway Medical College” of the Ministry of Railway. It has been renamed Medical School of Southeast University in April of 2000. During more than 70 years’ history, a great number of well-known alumni graduated from this medical school, who greatly contributed to the establishment and development of modern medicine and healthy care system of China.
Currently, the Medical School of Southeast University has 6 basic medical departments: microbiology & immunology, genetics & development biology, pathology & pathophysiology, human anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, as well as 12 clinical medical departments, including internal medicine, surgery, gynaecology & obstetrics, paediatrics, nursing, neurology & psychology, radiology, oncology, intensive care medicine, pathology & laboratory, ENT and ophathmology，and sports & rehabilitation. The medical school also boasts 14 research institutes which are dedicated to research, one teaching centre for medical experiments, and 2 key labs sponsored by Jiangsu province and National Education Ministry, respectively. There are 10 teaching hospitals which holds more than 10,000 inpatient beds totally, belonging to the clinical education center. Among them, Zhongda Hospital, the major teaching hospital of the medical school, is one of the first national health ministry-approved top class hospitals in the Jiangsu Province.
The medical school provides bachelor, master, and doctoral degree programs (M.D and Ph.D). The majors for undergraduates include 5-year and 7-year programs for clinical medicine, 5-year medical imaging, 5-year lab science, 5-year nursing, and 4-year bioengineering, respectively. The doctoral program and post-doctoral fellowship cover all clinical specialties, immunology and genetics, etc. The enrolled full-time students currently are more than 2400, which consist of 1400 bachelor candidates, 622 master candidates, 143 doctoral candidates and 390 oversea students from more than 20 countries.
There are several research labs and disciplines with national reputation, such as Jiangsu Provincial key lab of molecular and functional iamging, Genetics and biology development, Neurology and psychiatry, and Intensive care, etc. Many professor and scholars have been awarded by the central or local governmental academic programs including The Cheung Kong Sholars Programme, prominent young researches of National Scientific Foundation of China, Jiangsu provincial “Triple 3” and “Blue-Green” project, national or local best young and middle-aged experts, leading academic researchers for The Health Promotion Project in The Jiangsu Province and other leading academic researchers for medical study in the Jiangsu Province. Our faculties are very active in the medical academic societies, and also contribute a lot for medical journals as editors.
A large number of grants have been granted to our faculites in past 5 years, which included National Basic Science Research fundation (973 project), National high-tech Research Foundation (863 project), and projects of the National Natural Scientific Foundation of China (NSFC), etc. The medical school has won more than 100 national projects and approximately 300 local
projects, with the total amount of funds at more than 56 million RMB. In addition, up to 150 scientific achievements have been approved by national or local government, and 27 patents have been granted. More than 1000 papers have been published and over 300 papers published in English journals included by scientific citation index.
The Medical School provides the following postgraduate education programs:
1、Doctoral Programs (Ph.D., M.D.)：The Ph.D. program covers all disciplines of clinical Medicine ( especially for Internal medicine and Radiology), Immunology, and Genetics.
2、Master Programs：There are academic master degree and professional master degree. Master degree covers all disciplines of clinical and basic medicine, including: cardiology, respiratory internal medicine, gastroenterology, nephrology, hematology, endocrine and metabolic, rheumatics, infectious internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, urinary surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, plastic surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, traditional Chinese medicine, ophthalmology, ENT, emergency medicine, clinical laboratory, neurology, oncology, anesthesiology, psychiatry, nursing, anatomy, immunology, microbiology, pathology and pathophysiology, physiology, and pharmacology, etc.
Our research labs and faculties are integrated in the campus of Medical School and 10 teaching hospitals. There are several important labs such as the National Educational Ministry Key Lab of Genetics and Biology Development and Jiangsu Provincial Key Lab of Molecular & Functional Imaging, etc. There are around 150 teachers and scientists who are dedicated to teaching and research on basic medicine, while over 1000 physicians who have dual duties of clinic and research in the teaching hospitals. Zhongda Hospital, the major teaching and affiliated hospital of the medical school, is integrated the campus of the medical school. Combined with Zhongda Hospital, the Medical School has set up many research institutes including Institute of Cardiology, Institute of Neuropsychiatry Diseases, Institute of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery, Institute of Kidney Diseases, Institute of Hematological Diseases, Institute of Pathology, Institute of Diabetics, Institute of Interventional Radiology, Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery, Institute of Bone Disease, etc.
The research projects cover all medical and biomedical fields. The major research areas currently include:
(1) Pathogenic mechanism in hepatitis virus
(2) Antitumor mechanism in microorganism metabolic products.
(3) Immunological mechanism in the infectious diseases
(4) Tumor immunology & tumor stem cells
(5) Immunotherapy in cancer
(6) Genetic engineering antibody and vaccines,
(7) Transplantation immunology.
(9) Tumor signal transduction and oncogene expression

Supported by the Southeast University and governmental projects, our medical school has established strong research programs including the Master degree and Ph.D. programs. Many state-of-art modalities have been equipped. For example, the Jiangsu Key Lab of Functional and Molecular Imaging in our medical school installed the first national 7.0 T Micro-MRI ( Bruker) in 2007.
